An Analysis of Things Fall Apart â€Å"A penny will hide the biggest star in the Universe†¦..† It’s very smart to step out of my own shoes in order to see myself clearly in a situation. It’s necessary to do this in order to see and understand the whole picture. It’s smarter yet, to not only step out of my own shoes, but into those shoes belonging to someone else. Belonging to   someone different than me in as many ways possible.  Ã‚   Chinua Achebe’s, Things Fall Apart, shows us the importance of this through his story. He shows us that you have to physically put yourself into other people’s shoes, find out everything about them, in order to make any realistic judgment at all.   He shows us the difficulties of doing this, but also the rewards that come of it in the end.   Taking every possible opportunity to widen our perspective makes the walk back in our own shoes that much more worthwhile. Achebe’s story brings up a lot of issues pertaining to everyday life, even today.   It brings the idea of tolerance, and asking questions about our ways and ourselves. It makes the readers question when it’s okay to get involved, and the consequences of that.   All these being tiny matters compared to the idea of understanding of the importance of seeing the world through multiple perspectives, no matter how difficult. Its like flying a plane across country and sharing to others what you saw, as opposed to driving across the country and then doing the same. We live today in a society that wants to do things quickly, and easy.   Achebe wants to show us that that’s not the best way to view and pursue our lives. Okonkwo, the main character in Things Fall Apart is a member of the Ibo culture.   The Ibo is held together by one string, which is basically their very own traditions. Okonkwo is an extreme believer that his way, is the ONLY way. Even though Okonkwo breaks some rules in his own society, he thinks very highly of his own culture.   The Ibo ways are the only ways that Okonkwo allows himself to see.  Ã‚   He is a man demanding of his own family, dominating those around him, and rules â€Å"his household with a heavy hand.† Okonkwo is plagued by the fear of failure and weakness.   Throughout the story he puts his effort into struggles to repress any part of him that may resemble his father.

“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” by Maya Angelou

1. The speaker takes on the stance that she is fearless against common fears in life. 2. She deals with her fears in an imaginary sort of way.   She faces them with a â€Å"magic charm† that she â€Å"keep[s] up [her] sleeve†, not in a realistic way by marching up to them and facing them with courage, for example. 3.The author denies that she actually has any fears.   â€Å"[M]agic†, the way she deals with her fears, is not real; therefore I believe she is in denial of her fears. 4. I don’t think the author is afraid of what anything in the actual poem.   I think that she has probably already faced and conquered these particular fears or been subjected to them at some point already in her life.   This is why she does not fear them because they are not unknown. 5. The author should not be afraid of these fears because they are mostly childhood fears. 6. I think she strongly refused to be afraid of them because they are childish fears. 7. If the author was actually afraid of shadows, noises, ghosts, dogs, being alone, strangers, and boys, I’d take it that she was very childish in her manners and had not been exposed to much in her life.   While most children fear these things initially, they grow up and overcome those fears as they face life.   I think that if the writer were to be afraid of these, she may possibly be classified in a stereotypical manner of a young girl, but certainly not a woman, especially in the twenty first century where â€Å"woman† suggest strength and power almost equal to that of â€Å"man†.   However, â€Å"girl† still holds the stereotype of weaker, frailer, and in need of being protected (from things such as fears). 8. I do not find it interesting at all that none of these things frighten the speaker.   I think the speaker is trying to be convey strength, but it is such an immature strength, that it is a very weak argument. 9.   According to the fifth stanza, the speaker seems to be saying that boys are nasty brutes who pick on the girls who appear to be extremely girly.   The speaker probably fits in physically and stereotypically with the children, but mentally, emotionally, and intellectually she is older since she can detach herself from life.   She is more artistic and free in that sense than her peers. 10.   Other indicators that the speaker is fearless is how she makes the ghosts go away â€Å"I go boo Make them shoo† and her sense that anything is possible â€Å"I can walk the ocean floor And never have to breathe.† 11.   Strangers in the dark frighten me slightly as do panthers, but only if they are loose! 12.   I think, again, that the things that are mentioned are more childhood fears by both sexes.   I think females have deeper fears than this and it is a maturity issue.   I don’t think this is a poem about being a strong woman.   I think it is more a poem about being able to be oneself and not fearing what others think.

Reginald Rose’s ’12 Angry Men’ brings 12 jurors together in a room to decide whether a young foreign boy is guilty of killing his father. The play is interwoven with dynamic characterisation, striking symbolism and intense moments of drama. Although Rose positions Juror 8 as the hero, the strongest character is in fact Juror 4, who is an independent thinker, rational and calm even as tension begins to build. Although Juror 4 initially votes guilty, he is able to admit his fault and change his vote. The ability to remain independent proved to be the most important character trait of Juror 4. Throughout the play, Rose’s character is able to think freely and never lets his personal bias or peer-pressure affect his decision making. He analysed each piece of evidence with care and used logic and his skills of deduction to guide his vote. Juror 4 is able to remain calm and composed throughout the most stressful of situations. Listen.† Juror 4 sat through this entire scene without saying a word. It is only until Juror 10’s monologue is finished that Juror 4 speaks, calmly asking Juror 10 to â€Å"Shut [his] filthy mouth.† Juror 4 never discredits or implies anything towards the defendant and is always careful of what he says. After Juror 10’s tirade, Juror 4 tries to soften the impact created by 10; â€Å"Slums are potential breeding grounds for criminals.† He never attacks or hypes the situation at hand. He draws around ‘potential’ possibilities. Juror 4 initially had his doubts at the start of the case but was the only character that overcame his predisposition based on the an alysis of facts and evidence. The tongue also enables the Giraffe and Okapi to easily keep their young clean and healthy. What adaptation do both the Okapi and Giraffe have that allows them to gain nutrients in hard to reach places? Both the Giraffe and Okapi have incredibly flexible necks that allow them to awkwardly turn their heads to reach food. They can easily twist around trees or large branches to reach the leaves, or any food, that they desire. What substance do the Giraffe and Okapi share that allows them to eat and digest "harsh" foods? Both the Giraffes and Okapi have thick and sticky saliva that allows them to eat and digest thorny, sharp branches with ease. The thorns and sharp edges are covered by the saliva and can't prick or scratch the tongue, lining of the throat, or stomach. What ability do both the Okapi and the Giraffe obtain after birth which enables them to survive with more ease? After a Giraffe or Okapi young has been born, it can stand firmly on it's feet in 15 minuets. This allows them to be able to run if predators are nearby and it also allows them to get food from their mother quickly and efficiently. If the newborn does not gain the necessary nutrients, they will become weak and be easy prey for predators. What do mother Giraffes and Okapis have that keeps their baby on track when traveling? Both the Okapi and Giraffe have distinct markings (each individual animal has it's very own unique set) that catch a young's eye and basically says "Follow Me!" This enables the herd to travel more quickly and efficiently since they don't have to keep such a close eye on the young. What adaptation ensures that a Giraffe and Okapi baby will be fully developed, able to gain food, and resist predators? Both Giraffe and Okapi females have a gestation period of 15 months, which allows the young to fully develop in the womb before entering the world. If a baby entered the world weak, it wouldn't be able to get nutrients or resist predator attack. Also, since both species are so complex, each young requires more than a year to completely develop all it's parts.
